Harriers Win 2nd National Championship By Susan Rogers On November 12, the Brevard College cross country team won the NJCAA Cross Country Cham pionships for the second year in a row. Without a doubt, BC has had one of the finest groups of long distance runners for quite some time, having placed second in the national championships the two previous years. A major reason for the team’s success, according to coach Nor man L. Witek, is a proven train ing program. “I don’t question myself. Other schools go through periods of transition but we know our program works,” said Witek, who was named NJCAA Coach of the Year for 1982 and again for 1983. In addition, each member, though an individual, has a strong sense of responsibility to r The 1983 BC Cross Country Champions: (Back Row, L-R) Marty Hum phrey, Glenn Roach, Charlie Purser, Coach Norm Witek. Tanzanian runner Alphonce Swai is the standout on this year’s team. Named an All-American, Swai finished first at the national meet with a time of 24:30.08. Two other runners finished in the top ten. They were Gordon Snaden, who finished third with a time of 25:15.54, and Marty Hum phrey, who finished eighty with a time of 25:39.03. According to Coach Witek, there was no contest between Brevard and any other college at the championships. Witek said, “We had two guys (finish the race) before most of the other schools even had one (finish). We knew we were good, but we had no idea how good.” The team’s achievement is particularly outstanding when taking into con sideration the fact the top seven runners from last year’s team did not run for Brevard this year. This year’s team relies on a lot of natural talent. The coach is simply a guiding force, but the ef fort and work must come from the individual, according to Witek. He added, “The kids work hard, and they also have the lux ury of being very talented.” At the beginning of the season, Brevard was ranked fifth in NJCAA standings. Entering the national championships, the team still had no way of knowing just where they stood since Brevard usually runs against —See Harriers, Page 3 '£} Number 5 Tuesday, December 6, 1983 Brevard College, Brevard, N.C.
